Error when switching to java 1.5

Thanks Erin, this problem is not quite the same, but
similar enough that I probably have to step through
code to figure out what is going on.  I don't think it
is a Xalan problem.

What bugs me is that it doesn't happen with java
1.4.2.  What is so different about 1.5 that causes
this to happen?

Anyway, if I found out the issue, I'll post it back
here.
